Haiti holds its first “Green Donor Table” | |
The Government of Haiti, with the support of UNEP, held in Port Salut its first Green Donor Table, a summit aimed at improving dialogue between the government and donor institutions. This one-day event brought together local authorities and donors to discuss key environmental issues and possible solutions.
Participants included high-level representatives from the Ministries of Environment, Agriculture, Public Works as well as the Inter-Ministerial Committee for Land Planning. Norway, Canada, Switzerland and the Inter-American Development Bank were all represented at the meeting to learn more about the Government’s vision for the sustainable development of the South Department.
The country’s environmental priorities include: establishment of protected areas (marine and terrestrial); watershed management, reforestation and sustainable nature based production for economic purposes; coastal erosion and beach management; urban planning; and waste management.
With UNEP support, the Government will continue to regularly organise Government-Donor gatherings. This activity is part of the Programme Gouvernance Sud promoted by UNEP in the frame of the UN coalition for the South of Haiti, called the Côte Sud Initiative. This UN coalition was initiated by UNEP and the Government of Norway in 2011.
