The secretariats of the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) and the African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbird Agreement (AEWA) invite everyone to join in celebrating the ninth annual World Migratory Bird Day by organizing local events such as bird watching, festivals, exhibitions, presentations, bird counts and other education and public events.
On the second weekend of May every year, people and organizations around the world hold events to mark World Migratory Bird Day, celebrating migratory birds and raising awareness about the need to protect and conserve them. Since 2006, the Day has been celebrated in over 130 countries.
A dedicated website introduces this year’s theme: “Destination Flyways: Migratory Birds and Tourism”. The theme highlights the links between migratory bird conservation, local community development and wildlife-watching tourism around the world.
A benefit concert will be held in Bonn to mark the Day. Following last year’s success, the Corale Lirica San Rocco, Bologna’s opera choir, has generously offered to perform again this year in support of the campaign. The new element this year is the participation of the choir of Deutsche Welle, the German international broadcasting service.
The World Migratory Bird Day campaign, which is jointly organized by the CMS and AEWA secretariats, is also supported by a growing number of partners, including UNEP.
