Roaming around the Carpathians are species of Brown Bears, Wolves and Eurasian Lynx – large carnivores reintroduced into Europe’s mountainous landscape to maintain the ecosystems’ natural balance.

Hunting, habitat loss and illegal persecution are just a number of threats facing the large carnivores, in this region. Carpathian Convention countries have been monitoring the problems and are determined to find a solution.

Considering this, a conference on ‘Large carnivores’ protection in the Carpathians and working groups on Biodiversity’ will take place on 18-21 October 2016, in Rožnov pod Radhoštěm, Czech Republic.

The Carpathian Convention’s meeting will host a range of speakers, including Harald Egerer, head of the UN Environment Liaison Office in Vienna and Executive Secretary of the Framework Convention for the Protection and Sustainable Development of the Carpathians.

At the start of the conference, current statistics on population size and health of the large carnivores will be discussed. This is with the intention of drawing up national action plans towards the end of the meetings.

Let’s hope that after different carnivore management policies have been debated, decision-makers will howl in agreement.
