Foot-up for countries on chemicals and waste | |
A programme to help boost the ability of developing countries or those with economies in transition to implement chemicals and waste-related conventions has opened a call for applications.
The Special Programme will provide direct access to financing to boost capacity for implementing of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm conventions, the Minamata Convention and the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management. It will support institutional capacity to develop, adopt, monitor and enforce policy, legislation and regulation and to gain access to financial and other resources.
A green light for the Programme to begin was given by its Executive Board following a meeting in Geneva, where the rules of procedure, application process and processes for countries to follow were also approved.
The European Union, Finland, Germany, Sweden and the United States are the first donors to the Special Programme Trust Fund. Project funding will range from US$50,000 to US$250,000, with a maximum of US$500,000 and projects may last up to three years.
The call for applications is now open with the expectation that country-driven implementation activities will start in early 2017.
