Transboundary cooperation in the Dniester River Basin

Issued in January 2014, under the Environment and Security Initiative (ENVSEC), the publication "Dniester Without Borders" documents achievements of “Transboundary Co-operation and Sustainable Management in the Dniester River Basin, Phase III, Implementation of the Action Programme” (see text summary in English). The project, which was implemented and led by three of the ENVSEC partners, UNEP, UNECE and OSCE, focused on transboundary water monitoring, fish fauna conservation, information sharing on the basin level and public awareness raising.

Among the results described in the publication are reduced vulnerability to extreme floods and climate change and the development and signing of the Moldovan-Ukrainian Dniester River Basin Treaty. The signing ceremony of the Treaty took place at the 6th session of the Meeting of the Parties to the UNECE Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes (Water Convention) in Rome in 2012 (see Treaty in English as well as the related press release). “Dniester Without Borders” provides recommendations for further activities in the Dniester basin, and the publication is a valuable reference for future work on transboundary integrated water resources management.
