Latest scientific knowledge on climate change presented in Geneva

Six months ahead of the Paris Climate Conference, the Geneva Environment Network and IPCC Secretariats joined forces to organise a presentation of the IPCC Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) Synthesis Report on 2 June.

AR5 provides a clear view of the current state of scientific knowledge relevant to climate change. It comprises three Working Group reports and a Synthesis Report. The latter distils and integrates the findings of the three Working Group contributions to AR5. Written by over 800 scientists from 80 countries, and assessing over 30,000 scientific papers, AR5 informs policymakers what the scientific community knows about the scientific basis of climate change, its impacts and future risks, and options for adaptation and mitigation.

Professor Liliana Andonova from the Graduate Institute where the report was presented, and Jan Dusik - UNEP Director and Regional representative - welcomed 200 representatives from Geneva’s international community at the Institute’s Maison de la Paix.

The synthesis report was presented by IPCC Vice-Chairs Hoesung Lee and Jean-Pascal Van Ypersele; IPCC WGIII Co-Chair Youba Sokona and Gian-Kasper Plattner, Director of Science at the IPCC WGI Technical Support Unit. The presentation was followed by a debate moderated by Carlos Martin-Novella, the IPCC Secretariat officer in charge.
